INDEPENDENCE, MO Every morning, I walk into a job I genuinely enjoy. I get to work on big, meaningful projects, the kind of work that solves real problems and serves others in a real way. There is a deep, quiet satisfaction in knowing that the hours I spend at my desk or in the office are helping people and building something bigger than myself. I take pride in that work, and I give it my best effort every single day.
But when the workday ends, I leave it right where it belongs.
Work is important, but it isn't everything. Stepping away each evening opens up the space for what truly fills my life: sitting down with my family, serving at my church, sharing a great meal with people I love, and building things with my hands that will outlast me long after I’m gone. Building a legacy through service, faith, and tangible projects gives my life a rich sense of purpose.
For a long time, I thought the "big things", the grand achievements, the major projects, the lasting legacies were the main event. But life has a way of teaching you what actually matters when you finally slow down.
When the dust settles, the schedule clears, and I have the chance to just sit and spend time with my granddaughter, my entire perspective shifts.
Watching her explore the world, listening to her laugh, and holding her hand, those are the moments that stop time. In those quiet pauses, I realize something profound: the little things aren't just minor details. They are the whole point.
The big things, the impactful career, the community work, the long-term projects they certainly matter. But in the grand scheme of a well-lived life, the big things are mostly there to create and protect the space where the little things can happen. You work hard and build a solid foundation so that, at the end of the day, you have a safe, joyful place to sit down, look into the eyes of a grandchild, and appreciate the quiet magic of the present moment.
In the end, it’s not the giant milestones that warm your heart when you slow down. It’s the simple, unhurried, beautiful little moments that make all the big efforts worth it.
