My Life As Rain Man

I had a bit of a "brush with fame" today or at least, a brush with a very specific cinematic trope. While I was breezing through work tickets, rattling off reference numbers without so much as a glance at my screen, a coworker stopped dead in their tracks, looked at me with genuine bewilderment, and said: "You’re like a real-life Rain Man."

I didn’t have any toothpicks to drop, and I’m definitely not banned from any casinos in Vegas, but it got me thinking. To most people, a string of digits is just noise. To me? It’s a permanent resident in my brain.

My Uncanny Knack

While Raymond Babbitt (played by Dustin Hoffman) was a fictional "savant", many of us have our own "stupid human tricks". Mine just happens to be a high-speed lane for numbers.

For years, I’ve realized that my brain doesn't just "see" data; it archives it.

License Plates: I can still tell you the plate number of the 1969 blue Ford Mustang driven by my supervisor in 1999. Bonus: California plate 2EJ 934. It’s like a visual filing cabinet that I never bothered to clean out.

IP Addresses: At work, while others are copy-pasting, I’m typing out 10.61... from memory like it's my own phone number.

Work Tickets: Those 8-digit codes that keep our projects moving? I know many (too many) of them. It’s not a "cheat code", it’s just how my internal hard drive is wired.

Why Do I Remember This?

First, I don't know. Research suggests that while most people only encode 3 or 4 elements of a license plate, some of us find comfort in the "orderly patterns" of numbers. Whether it’s a memory palace or just a very specific kind of logical-mathematical intelligence, it makes the workday a whole lot faster.

So, while I might not be reading two pages at once with separate eyes like the real-life inspiration Kim Peek, I’ll take the "Rain Man" compliment. It’s a handy trait to have—at least until someone asks me where I left my car keys. (Spoiler: My brain only stores numbers (not every number), not locations and faces!)
